Senior Rabbi Dan Moskovitz

Senior Rabbi of Temple Sholom since July 2013

Dan Moskovitz was named Senior Rabbi of Temple Sholom in July 2013. Prior to joining Temple Sholom, Rabbi Moskovitz was Associate Rabbi at Temple Judea, in Los Angeles, California for 13 years. Rabbi Moskovitz is the author of numerous articles and publications including The Men’s Seder (MRJ Press) an experiential journey through the Passover Seder for Jewish men. He is an active leader in the community’s response to the Syrian Refugee Crisis, Climate Change and Social Isolation. Rabbi Moskovitz is also the chair of the Reform Rabbis of Canada and on the steering committee for Canadian Reform Judaism. 

Rabbi Moskovitz’ rabbinate has been shaped by his focus on fostering relational communities, his lifelong commitment to interfaith families raising Jewish children, and his work with Jewish by Choice. His approach to Torah and progressive Judaism is imbued with a passion for social justice and community collaboration.

As a teen, Dan was the International President of AZA, the boy’s division of the B’nai Brith Youth Organization (BBYO). Rabbi Moskovitz has since been the recipient of several local and national awards, all having in common recognition for outstanding service and leadership. He is a graduate of American Jewish University and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, holding graduate degrees in Jewish Education, Hebrew Letters and Rabbinic Ordination.

Rabbi Dan is also a passionate baseball fan, especially of his hometown San Francisco Giants. He has completed two full marathons, enjoys fishing the waters of British Columbia and is an avid woodworker. Dan and his wife Sharon Mishler have two sons and a daughter.

Associate Rabbi Carey Brown

Carey Brown has been a rabbi at Temple Sholom since 2011

Carey Brown has been a rabbi at Temple Sholom since 2011. She was ordained from the New York school of Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in 2005 and served for six years as Assistant and Associate Rabbi of Temple Isaiah in Lexington, Mass. Rabbi Brown is a native of Minneapolis, Minn. and a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She is married to Gregg Gardner, who serves as the Diamond Chair of Jewish Law and Ethics at UBC. Together they are the proud parents of Yael and Jonah.

Rabbi Brown is passionate about Jewish education for all ages and loves teaching Torah and Talmud to the Temple Sholom community through her classes and sermons.  She is also tremendously proud of the outreach work that she is fortunate to lead at Temple Sholom, including the award winning East Side Jews program, connecting young Jewish families in East Vancouver and beyond, and the coordination of the Jewish Information Class (JIC) for those exploring conversion.

Rabbi Brown is currently a fellow in the 8th cohort of Hartman Institute's Rabbinic Leadership Initiative (RLI) program. The RLI program is a 3-year study and leadership program for 27 North American and Israeli rabbis from across the denominational spectrum. The participants engage in the highest levels of Jewish learning, equipping them to meet contemporary challenges with ever-increasing intellectual and moral sophistication.

In her free time, Rabbi Brown loves exploring the outdoors –especially hiking and snowshoeing – and feels extraordinarily lucky to be living in Vancouver.

Cantor Shani Cohen

Cantor Shani Cohen has been a part of the Temple Sholom clergy team since July 2021

Cantor Shani Cohen has been a part of the Temple Sholom clergy team since July 2021. She was ordained by the HUC-JIR Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music in New York. As a student, Cantor Cohen served as the Student Cantor at Hevreh of Southern Berkshire in Great Barrington,Massachusetts, Tisch Cantorial Intern at Central Synagogue in Manhattan, andthe Cantorial Intern at Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn, where she led creative Shabbat, holiday, and educational experiences. She was the recipient of HUC-JIR’s prestigious Star Fellowship, and was part of the inaugural cohort of JDC Fellows for Global Jewish Leadership, through which she visited and worked with Progressive Jewish communities in Eastern Europe, Argentina,Georgia, and Azerbaijan. During her time at HUC-JIR, Cantor Cohen also had the opportunity to travel to Ohio and South Carolina to study the history of American Reform Judaism through an initiative from the American Jewish Archives.

Cantor Cohen grew up in Sunnyvale, California, and went onto study music and psychology at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma,Washington. After college, she earned her Master of Vocal Performance andPedagogy from the University of Houston, and also worked as a cantorial soloistand B’nei Mitzvah Coordinator at Congregation Shma Koleinu. It was at CSK that she was inspired to pursue the cantorate, through which she could continue to share her love of Judaism and Jewish music with others. Cantor Cohen feels so fortunate to be engaged in this sacred work in the gorgeous city of Vancouver,where she lives with her wife, Kylynn.

Rabbi Emeritus Rabbi Philip L. Bregman

Rabbi Philip Bregman joined the congregation in the summer of 1980 as the spiritual leader of Temple Sholom. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Social Work from the University of Toronto, as well as a Masters of Hebrew Letters, Rabbinic Ordination and a Doctor of Divinity from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion.

As of August 2013, Rabbi Bregman became Temple Sholom’s Rabbi Emeritus.

Rabbi Bregman’s commitment to community building is evident in his founding of RAV (the Rabbinical Association of Vancouver), his role as a teacher at Talmud Torah and TAG (the supplementary Jewish high school) and his work with interfaith groups. Within the congregation, he has trained lay leaders, empowering members to conduct Torah study, minyans and shivas. As an unwavering supporter of Israel, he has strengthened the synagogue’s connections to our homeland by leading tours and developing strong ties to many Israel-based organizations.

His wisdom, sensitivity, warmth and humor enable him to make a deep connection with people of all ages. With passion, energy and eloquence, Rabbi Bregman has been instrumental in increasing the membership of Temple Sholom from 70 families to over 700 member families. In addition, he has inspired six children of the congregation to become Rabbis.

Rabbi Bregman is married to Cathy Netter Bregman and has three children: Shai, Jordana and Shira.
